This university photography assessment draws inspiration from the captivating works of Olgac Bozalp, a Turkey-born visual artist known for blending themes of identity, memory, and storytelling through striking visual juxtapositions.
One image in particular from Bozalp’s portfolio deeply influenced the direction of my series: a hand holding an old Polaroid of a man (Olgac) standing in front of a castle, with that very castle in the real-time background. This haunting overlay of past, present, and implied future—all in one frame—sparked the core idea for my project.
🔪 The Concept: A Serial Killer’s Journey
This 6-photo iteration explores a fictional serial killer's narrative through still imagery. Drawing from the idea of memory and time, each image aims to capture a chilling, cinematic moment in a killer’s timeline—from stalking to aftermath. I meticulously plotted the characters, setting, and camera compositions to create suspense, while staying within the boundaries of what could be achieved without professional SFX.
While I’m not an SFX artist, nor do I have access to those tools or collaborators, I imagine that with their help, this series could have taken a much darker and more graphic turn. Still, I believe the atmosphere and narrative hold enough psychological weight to suggest the horror without explicit visuals.
Photo Highlights:
Staged portraits and scenes that mimic crime documentary aesthetics
Intentional use of lighting, blur, and framing to simulate voyeurism
Subtle visual clues hinting at the chronology of events
Repetition of elements to establish continuity across images
Final Thoughts:
This project pushed me to think like a director and not just a photographer. From the original spark lit by Olgac Bozalp’s work, to the final images that weave a story of dread and mystery—I hope this series invites viewers to ask: What happened here? And what might happen next?
